Surely, the fact that a person needs liberty in order to pursue the ends or interests which she inevitably has as a human being no less than the next person. The underlying value here is not liberty but, to be as uncontentious as possible, equal human worth. For those of us who think in this way, self-ownership offers a very incomplete understanding of what is wrong with slavery and the like. While the resurgence of institutions of absolute political power and slavery can never be ruled out, they are not a clear and present danger to citizens of modern constitutional liberal democracies.

It is proprietary power and it is only fettered by other such powers. Why should the distribution be one of unfettered proprietary powers? The answer is, I suggest, historical and relative, not perennial and absolute. The meaning of self-ownership has been shaped by its historical role as a response to the doctrines and practices of political absolutism in seventeenth-century Europe.
